CM Performing Arts Center Announces Season 45 at Launch Party

Some Long Island theaters announce their upcoming seasons via subscriber newsletters. Others post surprise announcements on Facebook. Some don’t announce full seasons at all.

However, for the last few years, CM Performing Arts Center has carried out a tradition of turning their season announcement into a full-blown night of celebration and performance. Season 45’s launch party on Friday, May 10 was no exception.

The evening was jam-packed with selections from the announced shows as well as previews from CM’s upcoming “Newsies,” opening next Saturday, May 18.

Here is the official 45th season:

First up is a lesser known show titled “Swing” – another dancing spectacular to follow a season filled with grand dance numbers. The original show opened on Broadway in 1999 and is a love letter to the swing style of jazz. As a jukebox musical, audiences will be able to sing along to beloved tunes like “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” and “Sing, Sing, Sing.” The show will run from September 7 through September 28.

Next is the movie turned musical “Ghost.” A far more intimate show, it follows the plot of the Patrick Swayze film in which two lovers are attacked in their apartment leaving the male lead dead, but alive through supernatural and song. It opened on Broadway in 2012, but closed after 136 regular performances after being met with tepid reviews. However, it was revamped as a touring production and is slowly becoming a cult favorite in regional and community theatre. It will run October 12 through November 2 – suggesting an homage to the Halloween season.

“A Christmas Story”

Just in the time for the holidays is “A Christmas Story” – running November 16 through December 22. While the live musical broadcast proved to be a cringe-fest that not even hate-watchers could suffer through, critics agree the show works better on stage. Of course the show follows the misadventures of Ralphie and his friends as the child protagonist does everything in his power to get a Red Ryder BB Gun. Featuring a large cast of kids, local child thespians might want to start preparing for the impending open call with a Christmas in July style rewatch.

“All Shook Up”

Finally, Season 45 will conclude with the Elvis Presley musical “All Shook Up.” This community theatre favorite combines Presley’s catchy tunes with… Shakespeare? Yes, you read that correctly. The plot loosely follows William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” with inspirations from other works like “Much Ado About Nothing,” “As You Like It,” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Despite the plot inspiration, the show takes place in the 50s and follows tomboy Natalie as she masks herself as a boy in order to get closer to Chad, her Presley inspired love interest. All your favorite songs are there – “Jailhouse Rock,” “Hound Dog,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and, of course, “All Shook Up.”

CM will also present a limited engagement of Frozen Jr. starring young thespians 13 to 18-years-old. The show will run November 30 through December 26.

Tickets are available on sale now for subscribers and will go on sale to the general public in July!
